Canon Production Printing ( Océ until the end of 2019 ) is one of the world's leading companies in the field of digital printing and document management products. The company employs around 3,000 people. The head office is in Venlo , the Netherlands .

history

The company was founded in Venlo in 1877 by the pharmacist Lodewijk van der Grinten (1831–1895). While looking for a source of sideline income, he came across butter color; with which the white substance of margarine, invented in 1869, can be colored so that it looks similar to butter . The company grew steadily up to the First World War and further members of the van der Grinten family joined the company.

After the company made losses in 1918, Frans van der Grinten decided to use the existing know-how about dyes for other purposes: in the area of blue printing materials . The first steps in this market were the production of blue printing paper, which was widely used to reproduce linear drawings in the 1920s. The brothers Karel and Louis developed a new process that came onto the market in 1930 under the name Océ, where the name stands for the abbreviation for “Without Components” (OC).

With the breakthrough of xerography in 1960, all copying techniques that had been common up to that point soon disappeared and the trend for the future was: copying on plain paper. Océ-van der Grinten, the company name that has meanwhile been registered everywhere, also switched to normal paper copying technology.

On November 16, 2009, the Japanese electronics company Canon announced that it was taking over Océ. Canon wanted to buy all the shares in circulation from Océ at a price of EUR 8.60 per share. According to the Dutch company, the merger has made Canon and Océ the world leader in the print industry.

At the beginning of 2020, the company name Océ was changed to Canon Production Printing .

Group structure

The German subsidiary Océ-Deutschland GmbH was based in Mülheim an der Ruhr and was transferred to Canon Deutschland GmbH on February 1, 2013 as part of the Canon integration .

In 1996, the high-performance printer (HLD) division of the Siemens group was taken over and incorporated into the group as Océ Printing Systems GmbH with the Poing location . The Océ OpenHouse , the largest annual digital printing trade fair in Europe, took place at this location every year up to and including 2007 . The Océ Home of Color has been taking place in Poing since March 2009 .

The joint headquarters of Océ (Schweiz) AG and Canon (Schweiz) AG is located in Wallisellen near Zurich. In 1997, Océ took over the majority of the shares in Messerli Informationstechnik (founded in 1876), which was renamed Océ (Schweiz) AG in 1998 , while Océ Printing Systems was integrated into the new company. In 2006 Océ (Switzerland) AG took over the system and service activities of mpa Direct AG .
