The Canossians ("Sons of Love", Latin Congregatio Filiorum a caritate vulgo Canossiani , abbreviation : FCC ) are a religious community in the Roman Catholic Church . The Canossians are an institute of consecrated life and were founded in Venice in 1831 on the initiative of the Holy Sister Magdalena Gabriela von Canossa (1774–1835) . As early as 1808 she had founded the female congregation of Canossians in Verona .

history

As early as 1799, the first considerations and plans for the establishment of a “Congregation of Divine Love” began. First was a composed of female and male members of the Order Institution thought. This attempt, begun in Milan , failed in 1826. On May 23, 1831, at the suggestion of Magdalena Gabriela von Canossa, the male congregation was initiated under the direction of Father Francesco Luzzo Ocam , together with two lay brothers in Venice. In September 1831 the Congregation of Canossians was founded by Pope Gregory XVI. approved and actively supported.

In 1830 they received from the Patriarch of Venice , Cardinal Ramazzotti , the recognition of a congregation under episcopal law. The congregation could now wear a religious habit. In 1897 the rules of the order were created by the Patriarch of Venice Angelo Giuseppe Cardinal Roncalli , who later became Pope John XXIII. , approved. In the years 1928–1952, the congregation experienced a great expansion under the direction of Father Angelo Pasa , who held the office of Superior General from 1946 to 1952 . In 1939 the congregation received by Cardinal Piazza , the canonical recognition and in 1949 by Pope Pius XII. the final papal approbation to the "Institute of Consecrated Life".

Organization and activities

Their field of work is the training and care of young people as well as the organization of leisure time and catechesis , for this purpose they built several youth camps . In 1966 they moved to the first mission station in Brazil ; today they have branches in the Philippines , East Timor , India , Kenya and Tanzania . Your religious community is represented by 32 congregations worldwide, they have 160 members, 115 of which belong to the priesthood. Since 2000 Father Giovanni Antonio Papa has been the Order's Superior General.
