Angelo Francesco Ramazzotti (born August 3, 1800 in Milan , † September 24, 1861 in Crespano del Grappa ) was an Italian bishop and cardinal- designate of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Angelo Ramazzotti was born to Giuseppe Ramazzotti and his wife Giulia Maderna and grew up in Milan. In October 1806 he was received Confirmation . As a young man he enrolled at the University of Padua , where he studied law and received his doctorate on August 10, 1823 . He then worked as a lawyer in Milan for around three years .

On September 23, 1826, he entered the seminary in his hometown of Milan, was ordained a subdeacon on March 14, 1829 , and a few weeks later, on April 4, 1829, a deacon . Immediately on the day of his ordination , June 13, 1929, he entered the order of the Oblates of St. Ambrose and Charles . On his behalf, he worked as a missionary in Milan and Como for around 20 years .

On May 20, 1850, Ramazzotti was appointed Bishop of Pavia . He was ordained bishop on June 30, 1850 by Cardinal Giacomo Filippo Fransoni ; Co- consecrators were Giuseppe Valerga , Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem , and Archbishop Giovanni Domenico Stefanelli . A short time later, Ramazzotti founded the Pontifical Institute for Foreign Missions (PIME), a community of priests engaged in missionary work. After eight years as Bishop of Pavia, Ramazzotti moved to the Patriarchate of Venice on March 15, 1858 , which he led as Patriarch until his death.

As early as August 2, 1860, Bishop Ramazzotti became an advisor to Pope Pius IX. It was he who wanted to admit Ramazzotti to the college of cardinals in the consistory of September 27, 1861 . Ramazzotti then wrote to the Pope and asked him to refrain from the planned creation because of his poor health. Also, he wrote to Cardinal Giacomo Antonelli , he could not afford the costs associated with the cardinal's uprising.

Ramazzotti went to Crespano del Grappa to cure his angina pectoris . He died here on September 24, 1861, three days before the consistory, at the age of 61. Strictly speaking, Angelo Ramazzotti was never a cardinal, but since he was led by Pope Pius IX. was nominated, he is often referred to as such.

He was first buried in Venice Cathedral before his remains were transferred to Milan around 100 years later, in 1957, where he found his final resting place in the church near the center of the PIME. The renewed consecration was made by Cardinal Angelo Roncalli and Bishop Giovanni Battista Montini, two future popes.

Pope Paul VI It was also who opened the beatification process for Angelo Ramazzotti in 1976 . In this process, Pope Francis awarded him the heroic degree of virtue on December 14, 2015 .
