Giuseppe Luigi Cardinal Trevisanato (born February 15, 1801 in Venice , † April 28, 1877 there ) was Cardinal of the Catholic Church and Patriarch of Venice .

Life

Giuseppe Luigi Trevisanato studied philosophy and theology at the seminary in his hometown of Venice. On March 13, 1824, the Patriarch of Venice, Johann Ladislaus Pyrker , ordained him as a priest. He worked for many years as a professor at the seminary of Venice and in 1841 became theological canon of the cathedral chapter.

Trevisanato was Bishop of Verona from March 15 to September 27, 1852 and Archbishop of Udine from September 27, 1852 to April 7, 1862 . He was ordained bishop on January 16, 1853 by Cardinal Fabio Maria Asquini , Prefect of the Congregation for Indulgences and Relics ; Co- consecrators were Curia Archbishop Gaetano Bedini and Archbishop Antonio Ligi-Bussi . From April 7, 1862 until his death he was Patriarch of Venice. Pope Pius IX appointed him cardinal on March 16, 1863. From September 22, 1864 until his death he was cardinal priest of the titular church Santi Nereo e Achilleo . Cardinal Trevisanato took part in the First Vatican Council as a council father in 1869 and 1870 .

After his death, the burial he had ordered in the seminary was refused by the state authorities. Cardinal Trevisanato has been resting in St. Mark's Basilica since November 1957 .
