Canyon (band)

Canyon were a folk rock band in the second half of the 1970s. Before 1978 the group was called Itcheyfoot .

history

The musicians Manfred Wetterich, Wolfgang Rönsch and Achim Dresch met in the mid-1970s. Wetterich had previously played at The Chantils in Gerolzhofen , Dresch there at Eruption . Rönsch came from Weidenberg near Bayreuth .

The group initially called itself Itcheyfoot . The head of the band was Manfred Wetterich (guitar and lead vocals), who composed many of the songs. Wolfgang Rönsch (vocals, mandolin and guitar) and Achim Dresch (vocals, banjo, violin, keyboard and harmonica) accompanied him with often polyphonic singing. The group from Franconia made several guest appearances in West Berlin clubs such as the egg shell on Breitenbachplatz . In Messerschmitt cabin scooter toured through the UK .

The live album Contemporary Folk & Bluegrass was created on December 17, 1976 in Würzburg . Six of the fourteen songs are compositions by Wetterich. It was played exclusively on acoustic instruments .

With increasing success, the band was given the opportunity to record a second album under more professional conditions. In this context, with the same cast, the name was changed to Canyon. The LP of the same name was recorded in the spring of 1978 in the Hansa Studios on Köthener Strasse in Berlin and in the Paragon Studio there , where it was also mixed. Several guest musicians were used, which greatly changed the style. Among other things, trumpets , saxophones , an accordion and a drum kit were used.

From October 21 to November 5, 1978, the group toured Germany as the opening act for Barclay James Harvest . She played in the ice rink in Berlin, the Westfalenhalle  3 in Dortmund , in the Kronebau in Munich and in the Congress Center Hamburg . On June 23, 1979 she performed at the British Rock Meeting on the Loreley open-air stage .
