The Capanna Punta Penia is located on the Marmolada in the municipality of Canazei just on the border with the province of Belluno at 3340 m slm It is the highest refuge in the Dolomites and is only a few meters below the Punta Penia northeast of the hut, which is 3343 m is the highest peak in the Dolomites. A variant of the Dolomites high path 2 leads past the hut and ends the Marmolada via ferrata leading from the Forcella Marmolada along the western ridge of the Marmolada . The unheated refuge looks more like a managed bivouac hut and has a small kitchen, dining room and bedrooms. The toilet house, secured with steel cables, is located directly above the abyss of the approximately 800 m deep south face of the Marmolada.
history
The single-storey aluminum-clad wooden hut was built in the late 1940s on the remains of an old Austro-Hungarian war barrack from the First World War by a mountain guide from Alba di Canazei on his own initiative. In the period that followed, the Spartan hut was expanded several times. Until the 1980s, Capanna Punta Penia did not offer any sleeping places. The hut was damaged during the autumn storm Vaia at the end of October 2018, when gusts of over 200 km / h were measured at the measuring station at Punta Rocca, just a few hundred meters away.
