Cape Town (also known abroad as Mat Joubert ) is an internationally produced television series by the German producer Annette Reeker . The series, which is produced without a permanent TV channel, is based on the novel “ The Sad Police Officer ” (OT. Afrikaans : Feniks , English: Dead before dying ) by the South African author Deon Meyer . The eponymous setting is Cape Town .

action

After the wife of the policeman Mat Joubert was murdered, he fell into a deep hole and devoted himself continuously to alcohol consumption and suicidal thoughts. When he returns to work, he gets a new partner with whom he is supposed to track down a serial killer who apparently randomly kills men with a German wartime pistol. Curiously, this perpetrator puts cardboard masks of celebrities on his victims. At the same time, a number of young women are raped and murdered after being made compliant with drugs.

Cast and dubbing

The German-language dubbing of the series was done by FFF Grupe GmbH, Munich under the dialogue direction by Nicola Grupe-Arnoldi and Matthias Müntefering. The latter also created the dialogue book.

Production background

Producer Annette Reeker began the series without developing a television station established as a production partner. She had already acquired the filming rights to Deon Meyer's book five years earlier. The production budget was provided entirely by private investors. It was 6 million euros, which corresponds to almost one million euros per episode. Reeker also wrote the scripts herself and had them translated from German into English by British writer Mark Needham after she disliked the work of previously hired authors. Furthermore, Reeker has acquired all rights to Meyer's character Mat Joubert in order to be able to develop his own crime novels for further episodes without a literary template.

Home video release

In German-speaking countries, the first season of the series, with the subtitle Serial Murder in Cape Town , was released on DVD and Blu-ray on May 18, 2018. In France it had already appeared on M6 Video on November 2, 2016 .
