The caprine arthritis encephalitis virus (CAEV) goats is a retrovirus of the genus of lentiviruses .
The CAE virus causes a slow-moving chronic infectious disease in goats , caprine arthritis encephalitis . The CAE virus is closely related to the Maedi Visna virus (MVV) in sheep. Both viruses have a common group antigen. The incubation period can be several years. Eventually only about 30% of infected goats show clinical symptoms.
Similar to the MVV, the CAE virus can be transmitted through milk , but also through infected and virus-containing secretions from the animals concerned. Transmission through droplet infection is also possible.
