Capulálpam de Méndez is a mountain village with approx. 1,300 inhabitants and the administrative seat of a municipality ( municipio ) with a total of approx. 1,500 inhabitants in the north of the state of Oaxaca in Mexico . The place is classified as Pueblo Mágico .

Toponym

The name of the place is composed of the word capulín , a wild cherry species ( Prunus salicifolia ) and the name of a colleague of Benito Juárez .

Location and climate

The place Capulálpam is located in the mountains of the Sierra Norte approx. 75 km (driving distance) northeast of the city of Oaxaca de Juárez at an altitude of approx. 2065  m . The better-known and larger neighboring town of Ixtlán de Juárez is only about 10 km to the northwest. The climate is temperate because of the altitude; Rain (approx. 950 mm / year) falls mainly during the summer half-year.

economy

In 1775 a gold and silver mine was opened in the area; A significant part of the proceeds flowed into the organization of the church. The people of the region still live largely self-sufficient from the yields of their fields (corn, wheat) and gardens (potatoes, beans, tomatoes, chilli etc.). Cattle breeding (chickens) is only practiced to a small extent. Since the beginning of the 21st century tourism has been added as a source of income for the place; traditional Indian healing arts are also offered.

history

Little is known about the history of the place and its surroundings. The Zapotec Indians living here resisted both the Aztec and Spanish occupations.

Attractions

  • The townscape with its winding Indian and straight Spanish streets and its houses painted in different colors is well worth seeing.
  • The parish church of San Mateo dates from the 17th / 18th centuries. Century. Both towers have a bell storey. The nave , which is equipped with numerous carved altars, some of which are gilded , has an imposing wooden ceiling with tie rods . The main altar in the flat-closing apse is a masterpiece in the style of Churriguerism .
