Carabus rutilans is a beetle from the family of ground beetles and the subfamily carabinae .

The genus name Carabus , like the names of the higher taxa up to the family (Carabina, Carabini, Carabinae, Carabidae) is derived from the ancient Greek κάραβος = kárabos. The species name rutilans ( Latin ) means "shimmering reddish".

The attractive appearance of the stately beetle makes it a coveted collector's item and contributes to the fact that it is bred by lovers. The hybridization of Carabus rutilans with Carabus hispanus provides the colorful Carabus croesus . The writer Ernst Jünger chose "Carabus rutilans" as the title for a Parergon and describes a journey with the aim of capturing the beautiful beetle.

The handsome beetle is only found in the eastern Pyrenees . Despite the limited distribution area, the species has split into three subspecies with numerous forms. In addition to the nominate form Carabus rutilans rutilans , the subspecies Carabus rutilans opulentus and Carabus rutilans perignitus also occur.

Characteristics of the beetle

The beetle has the shape typical for the genus with the elongated head stretched forward with arched eyes , eleven-limbed thread-like antennae and six long legs with five-limbed tarsi . The strong, inwardly curved upper jaw with an inner tooth as well as the almost triangular truncated end links of the four-part lip and three-part jaw palpation are clearly visible from above (Fig. 1).

The underside of the body of the 24 to 27 millimeter large beetle is black, as are the legs and antennae. The head, pronotum and elytra are golden-green or coppery and very shiny. The pronotum is finely wrinkled across (Fig. 1). The wing covers show three shallow lines of small dots and three rows of large green-gold pits (Fig. 2).

biology

Larvae and adults of Carabus rutilans are predatory. The species feeds on worms , slugs and snails . The beetle pursues the prey, which it tracks down in rotting leaves.

The species is found from April to September under stones and in rotting vegetation near streams in moist but sparse forests, mainly of beech and chestnut , but also of oak and pine at medium heights up to a height of 2200 meters. The animals overwinter in tree stumps or under moss.

distribution

Carabus rutilans is found in a narrowly defined area between the French part of the eastern Pyrenees and the northern border of the province of Barcelona . The subspecies Carabus rutilans opulentus and Carabus rutilans perignitus occur only in the Spanish part of the eastern Pyrenees, while the nominate form Carabus rutilans rutilans also occurs in the French part.
