Caracato is a town in the La Paz department in the South American Andean state of Bolivia .
Location in the vicinity
Caracato is the central place of the canton Caracato in the district ( Bolivian : Municipio ) Sapahaqui in the province of Loayza . The village of Caracato is located at an altitude of 2584 m in the northern foothills of the Serranía de Sicasica at the confluence of the Río Ticoma and Río Sapahaqui , which merge below the place to the Río Caracato .

Caracato lies between the Bolivian Altiplano in the west and the Amazon lowlands in the east. The region has a typical daytime climate in which the mean temperature differences between day and night are greater than the temperature differences between the seasons.
The mean average temperature of the region is just under 15 ° C and fluctuates between 11 and 12 ° C in June / July and a good 16 ° C in November (see Luribay climate diagram). Transport network
Caracato is 118 kilometers south-east of La Paz , the capital of the department of the same name.
From La Paz, the paved highway Ruta 1 leads south via El Alto to the south. About 75 kilometers south of El Alto, a country road branches off in Ayo Ayo to the northeast and reaches Caracato after 41 kilometers.

Due to the historical population development, the Aymara population is predominant in the region , in the municipality of Sapahaqui 96.7 percent of the population speak the Aymara language .
