The dwarf pea shrub ( Caragana pygmaea ) is a kind of family of legumes (Fabaceae), subfamily Pea (Faboideae). It is one of the smaller representatives of the genus of the pea bushes .

Appearance

The dwarf pea shrub is a small shrub with a height of up to 0.5 meters. The twigs are shiny yellowish, initially hairy, but later glabrous. The leaves consist of four narrow leaflets, the individual leaflets are inverted-lanceolate to linear and measure 7 to 17 mm long and 1 to 3 mm wide.

Dwarf pea bushes are characterized by yellow, single flowers . Flowering time is in May. The tubular calyx measures 5 to 6 mm in length, the crown 10 to 16 mm. Slender, initially hairy, 2 to 3 cm long pods develop from the flowers.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 16.

distribution

The dwarf pea bush is native to temperate East Asia in Mongolia, northern China and eastern Siberia . It grows on permeable soils at altitudes of 900 to 1300 meters.

use

It was introduced as an ornamental plant in Europe and North America . In the case of pea bushes, which are offered in the garden trade as a high trunk, it is usually a refinement of the common pea bush with the dwarf pea bush.

Systematics

Three varieties can be distinguished:

  • Caragana pygmaea var. Angustissima C.K. Schneider - ruler, only 1 mm wide papers, northern China ( Nei Mongol )
  • Caragana pygmaea var. Parviflora H.C. Fu - flower stalk with dividing tissue in the lower half, crown smaller than 15 mm, northern China ( Nei Mongol )
  • Caragana pygmaea var. Pygmaea - pedicel with separating tissue in the center crown 15 to 16 mm
