distribution
The species of the genus are native to East Asia and can be found there in moist mountain forests .
Botanical history and systematics
The genus was first described in 1835 by Philipp Franz von Siebold and Joseph Gerhard Zuccarini in their Flora Japonica . Within the family it is placed in the subfamily Hydrangeoideae and there in the tribe Hydrangeae.
The internal system of the genre is considered to be in need of revision. It includes only a few species, including:
- Cardiandra alternifolia Siebold & Zucc. : It was first described from Japan.
- Cardiandra formosana Hayata : It occurs in Taiwan and in Zhejiang.
-
Cardiandra moellendorffii (Hance) Migo : It occurs in Japan on the Ryūkyū Islands and in China at altitudes between 700 and 1500 meters. There are two varieties:
- Cardiandra moellendorffii var. Moellendorffii : It occurs on the Ryūkyū Islands and in Anhui, Fujian, Jiangxi and Zhejiang.
- Cardiandra moellendorffii var. Laxiflora (HL Li) CF Wei : It occurs in Guangdong, Guangxi, Guizhou, Hubei and Hunan.
