Eastern mountain beach
Carl Östen Emanuel Bergstrand (born September 1, 1873 in Stockholm , † September 27, 1948 in Uppsala ) was a Swedish astronomer.
Life
From 1909 to 1938 he was professor of astronomy at Uppsala University .
From the beginning, Bergstrand concentrated on astrometry , and here especially on the investigation of photographic recordings to measure stellar parallax . He used the movements of the Uranus moons in their orbits to determine the period of rotation and the equatorial flattening of the planet. He also examined the sun's corona , drawing on photographs taken during the expedition on the occasion of the solar eclipse of August 21, 1914. In 1924 he became a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences . Since 1938 he was a corresponding member of the Académie des sciences .
Bergstrand wrote several popular science works on astronomy, including Most Famous Astronomi in 1925.
The moon crater Bergstrand is named after him.
His son Erik Bergstrand was a well-known physicist, his father was Carl Erik Bergstrand .
Honors
The Bergstrand crater on Earth's moon was named after him by the IAU in 1970 .
