Carl Alexander Krethlow

Carl Alexander Krethlow (born January 12, 1965 in Bern ) is a Swiss military historian .

Life

Alexander Krethlow attended schools in Muri and Bern. After graduating from the Einsiedeln Abbey School in 1985 , he studied history and German at the University of Geneva and contemporary history, Swiss history and Russian studies at the University of Bern . Study visits took him to Lomonossow University in Moscow as well as to Saint Petersburg and London. In 1994 he graduated with a licentiate (lic. Phil. Hist.). In 1995 he was studying at the Istituto Svizzero di Roma , and a year later in Prague. In 1997 he was with Judit Garamvölgyi at the University of Bern with the dissertation The Order of Malta . Change, internationality and social networking in the 19th century to become Dr. phil. PhD. Research stays in Germany, Turkey and England followed. In 2010 he completed his habilitation at the University of Bern with the thesis General Field Marshal Colmar Freiherr von der Goltz Pascha . A biography . He has the venia docendi for modern history at the department for modern history and contemporary history (NNG) of the University of Bern.

He is a member of the Military History Working Group and the Clausewitz Society . He is also a colonel (militia) in the Swiss Army ; From 2010 to 2015 he was Deputy Head of Civil Protection and Head of Strategy in the Federal Department of Defense, Civil Protection and Sport (DDPS). Since June 1, 2015, he has been Secretary General of the Intergovernmental Conference on the Military, Civil Protection and Fire Brigades.

Krethlow is committed to numerous social and charitable projects in the Holy Land . He has been a member of the Order of Knights of the Holy Sepulcher in Jerusalem since 1997 , and a member of the Order of Malta Hospital Service .

Alexander Krethlow is married to the historian Donata Krethlow-Benziger.
