Carl August Tanton (born March 29, jul. / 10. April  1801 greg. Or July 29 jul. / 10. August  1801 greg. In Haapsalu , † June 1 jul. / 13. June  1890 greg. In Paldiski ) was an Estonian organ builder .

Life and organ building

Carl August Tanton's grandfather was the shoemaker Daniel Christoph Tanton, born in Stralsund in 1742 . The family emigrated to the Baltic States .

His father, Christian Daniel Tanton, was born in Haapsalu (German Hapsal ) on the Estonian Baltic coast in 1779 . Carl August Tanton became an orphan at an early age . He grew up with his half-brother Christian Daniel.

Carl August Tanton began an apprenticeship as a carpenter in Haapsalu early on. Possibly he learned the organ building trade in southern Sweden. After the Olaikirche in Tallinn ( Reval ) burned down in June 1820 , he assisted the southern German organ builder Eberhard Friedrich Walcker with the rebuilding of the organ , which was completed in 1842.

Between 1844 and 1855, Carl August Tanton probably built twelve church organs in Estonia. They were found in the churches of Mihkli , Lääne-Nigula , Märjamaa , Juuru , Pühalepa , Hageri , Martna , Kirbla , Lihula , Kullamaa , Paldiski and in the St. Michaelis Church of the Swedish parish of Tallinn. His church organs in Martna (1845), Lihula (1845/46), Kirbla (1850) and Kullamaa have been preserved to this day. The organ in Kullamaa was completed in 1854. It is probably Carl August Tanton's last work.

In 1869 Tanton moved with his family to Paldiski ( Baltischport ), where he died of pneumonia in old age .

Private life

Carl August Tanton was married to Henriette Berg. The couple had five children.
