Carl Degenhard Menzen (born June 17, 1849 in Monschau ; † March 23, 1931 in Frankfurt am Main ) was a German lawyer (Dr. jur.), Judge and author of numerous legal writings and legal commentaries , many of which appeared in several editions.

Life

Menzen was born the son of a notary . After attending grammar school in Bonn and various stations during his studies and legal clerkship , he was appointed magistrate in Daaden in 1880 . From 1888 to 1897 he was a district judge in Hechingen , where he inadvertently became the starting point of an escalating wave of lawsuits in 1889, the so-called Hechinger watering can trials . In 1897 he was transferred to Frankfurt am Main , where he held the position of a royal district judge until his retirement in 1921.

Between 1886 and 1902 Menzen was the author and editor of numerous legal publications, of which the German Citizens Register is the best known. With the help of numerous case studies, the German Citizens Register was intended to bring the German Civil Code (BGB), which came into force on January 1, 1900, closer to even an inexperienced reader . Since historically different legal systems had been applied in the German Reich for historical reasons and the citizens were not familiar with the new laws, the book met with great demand and was also a commercial success for Carl Degenhard Menzen.

In 1911 he was awarded the Order of the Red Eagle, 4th class. He was also a holder of the Prussian Order of the Crown, 4th class.
