Carl Emil Doepler (born March 8, 1824 , † August 20, 1905 in Berlin ) was a German painter, book illustrator and costume designer .

life and work

Doepler began his training with Ferdinand Piloty in Munich . From 1849 to 1854 he was in New York , but then returned to Munich for further training in 1855 to see Piloty's son Carl Theodor . From 1860 to 1870 he was a costume designer at the theater in Weimar and a teacher of costume studies at the local art school . From 1870 he was appointed professor in Berlin. He painted numerous pictures, illustrated articles and books (e.g. Die Gartenlaube ), designed murals for private houses and painted paintings with motifs from Nordic-Germanic mythology.

Stage costumes for Wagner's Ring

As a costume designer, he designed 500 drawings for costumes for the first production of the Ring of the Nibelung at the newly founded Bayreuth Festival in 1876, which Richard Wagner criticized as "too historical". They were still used, but in 1881 the complete set of the world premiere with Doepler's costumes was sold to the opera director Angelo Neumann . He sent the Bayreuth Ring on tours throughout Europe. As a result, the costumes were seen as "trend-setting".

His wife Berta (née Schüler, died February 10, 1902 at the age of 80 in Berlin) was a cousin of Else Lasker-Schüler . His son Emil Doepler (1855–1922) was a painter , craftsman , commercial artist and heraldist .
