Carl Fredrik Kiörboe (born June 1, 1799 in Christiansfeld , † January 2, 1876 in Dijon ) was a Swedish painter.

Life

Kiörboe was born in the Duchy of Schleswig . After a time as a commercial student in Holland and Hamburg , he came to Stockholm . His maternal uncle encouraged him to study drawing while teaching him animal anatomy and veterinary medicine . In 1829 Kiörboe began a military career with the cavalry regiment in Jämtland . At the same time he was painting small horse pictures in pastel , soon switched to oil paintings and made lithographs with horse studies. In his military career he was promoted to lieutenant and in 1837 he was given the title of captain . After a visit to Berlin , he moved to Paris in 1840 , where he sat down firmly.

Kiörboe is mainly known for his animal paintings, so there are equestrian portraits of Karl XIV. Johann , Karl XV. and Napoleon III. In the Paris Salon in 1843 he presented a fox and a bulldog painting, in 1844 a deer hunt and in 1846 a fox in a sling . The most famous painting is generally called The Flood (Swedish: Översvämningen , see picture). Kiörboe was called the Swedish Court Painter and was a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Liberal Arts .

During the course of the Paris Commune in 1871, Kiörboe's apartment in the Montretout district of Saint-Cloud was destroyed. He lived his last years with his stepdaughter and her partner in Dijon .
