Carl Georg Steinicke (born August 7, 1877 in Berlin , † March 5, 1939 in Munich ), known as "Papa Steinicke", was a bookseller and antiquarian in Munich.

Live and act

Steinicke founded a bookstore with an antiquarian bookshop in Munich in 1903 at Lindwurmstrasse 5a. In 1914 Steinicke opened in Adalbertstrasse. 15 ( Maxvorstadt ) behind his bookstore there is a cabaret for drama performances and lecture evenings. The Steinickesaal quickly developed into a discussion forum for intellectuals, writers and philosophers.

Max Weber gave at least two lectures in the Kunstsaal of the Steinicke bookstore. On November 7, 1917, he gave a lecture on the subject of “ Science as a Profession ” as part of the lecture series “Intellectual work as a profession ”. On January 28, 1919, the lecture “ Politics as a Profession ” took place in the same series of lectures . The series of lectures was organized by the “Free Students Association. Regional Association of Bavaria ”.

In 1932 Steinicke converted his bookstore into a poets and artists' club. During the Third Reich, opponents of National Socialism from various political parties met here in the evening : Social Democrats , Communists , Central People and members of the Bavarian People's Party .

Steinicke was a Munich city ​​councilor . He promoted art life in Munich and was a co-founder of the Bavarian Adult Education Association .

Honors

  • At the former location of his bookstore (the building was destroyed in World War II), a small plaque was attached to the facade of the new building (see illustration).
  • In Munich, Maxvorstadt district, a small street, the Steinickeweg , was named after him.
