from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl Georg von La Roche (born January 11, 1766 in Warthausen , † September 11, 1839 in Berlin ) was a Prussian secret Oberbergrat and played a leading role in the circle around Henriette Herz . He should not be confused with the better known actor Carl von La Roche (1794–1884).

Life

Carl was born the son of the writer Sophie von La Roche and Georg Michael von La Roche (1720–1788) in Warthausen . He was the brother of Maximiliane Brentano and thus the uncle of Clemens Brentano and Bettina von Arnim .

He received his school education in Speyer . In Berlin he began training in the mountain department in 1784 and frequented Henriette Herz's salon . Together with Dorothea Veit and Wilhelm von Humboldt, the two had come together to form a virtuous league of virtues. In Erfurt , Carl and Caroline v. Dacheröden engaged and won them over to their union. The engagement was dissolved by her after she had met Wilhelm von Humboldt personally in 1788. In 1791, Caroline and Wilhelm married, but remained good friends with Carl throughout their lives.

In 1789, La Roche became an assessor at the mining office in Halle (Saale) . In 1792 he was promoted to the Prussian mountain ridge near the salt works in Schönebeck . His mother describes her visit to him in the book Journey from Offenbach to Weimar and Schönebeck in 1799 . In 1803 Carl went to the General Salt Administration in Berlin and in 1805 became the secret upper mountain ridge. In 1810 he became director of the Oberbergamt and in the same year also a member of the lawless society in Berlin .

Until his retirement two years before his death, he held the position in the chief mining office.
