Carl Gustav Odermann

Carl Gustav Odermann (born May 6, 1815 in Leipzig , † February 12, 1904 in Dresden ) was a German pedagogue , business school teacher and author .

Life

Carl Gustav Odermann was born into a simple family. After attending elementary school, he entered a grocery store as an apprentice. There, despite his talent, he was refused entry into the apprenticeship department of the public commercial college. His school principal, August Schiebe, encouraged him in his private studies. In 1839 Odermann was accepted into the teaching staff of the public commercial college (ÖHLA) in Leipzig with a small number of students. He stayed there until 1854. After extensive publication activities, he received his doctorate in Leipzig in 1853.

When a trade school based on the Leipzig model was to be established in Dresden in 1854, Odermann was recommended by his colleague Friedrich Ernst Feller , at that time director of the Gotha trade school, and elected as the first director. Odermann worked in Dresden until March 1863. He was director of Leipzig until Easter 1878, when he retired. On the occasion of his retirement he was awarded the title of professor. He became known as a pedagogue in commercial schools, with a preferred didactic education. His continuing merit is in finding and perfecting a suitable method for teaching business studies.

Odermann died in Dresden in 1904 and was buried in the Trinitatisfriedhof .

The Feller-Odermann was the most widely used arithmetic textbook in the German language of the 19th and 20th centuries. Probably the most famous reader of this book was Karl Marx .

Honors

On January 1, 1906, "Odermannstrasse" in Leipzig was named after him.
