Carl Heinrich Hertwig , also Karl Heinrich Hertwig (born January 10, 1798 in Ohlau , † July 19, 1881 in Berlin ) was a German veterinarian , university teacher and medical adviser .

Life

Carl Hertwig attended the grammar school in Brieg . From 1817 he studied pharmacy at the Royal Surgical Institute in Wroclaw . A government scholarship enabled him to study veterinary medicine at the Veterinary Schools in Vienna (1819/1820) and Munich (1820/1821). In 1822 he passed his veterinary exam in Berlin.

He then traveled to Germany, Switzerland, France, England and Holland to complete his academic training.

In 1823 he got a job as a repetitor at the Animal Medicine School in Berlin and initially did special chemistry and operations . He was also the director of the Small Pets Clinic .

In 1826 he was in Berlin with his dissertation "Experimenta quaedam de effectibus laesionum in partibus encephali singularibus et de verosimili harum partium functione" doctorate and he took only a part, and in 1830 the management of the hospital barn school. A year later he passed the state examination as a doctor and surgeon .

He was promoted to first class veterinarian in 1828 and senior teacher in 1829. In 1833 he was appointed professor at the Thierarzneischule Berlin, and in 1837 he was also appointed veterinary professor in the Medical College of the Province of Brandenburg.

At the beginning of 1845 he made a trip to Bohemia on behalf of the Prussian government to investigate the rinderpest that had broken out there . In addition, he was appointed to a commission of inquiry with the task of researching and developing preventive measures against rinderpest in Russia , for which he was awarded the Order of St. Anne.

At the General War School , he held lectures on horse knowledge from 1855 . He was promoted to the Royal Medical Council in 1870 and retired in 1877.

In addition to researching and teaching at the university, Hertwig was also an extremely productive author of specialist books and editor of veterinary journals for his time. In 1835, together with Ernst Friedrich Gurlt, he founded the magazine for the whole of animal medicine , which he also published until 1874.
