After training as a businessman and working in Hamburg and England, Illies became an employee of the first German company in Japan, Louis Kniffler & Co. in Yokohama, in 1866 . In 1880 Illies took over the company and continued to run it under his own name. In 1890 Illies returned to Germany and in 1898 chose Hamburg as the company's headquarters. The company continued to play an important role in trade with Japan.
The East Asian Association was founded on the initiative of Illies in 1900. In addition, Illies was the first chairman of the association from 1900 to 1904.
