resume

In October 1871, on the instructions of Kaiser Wilhelm I, a permanent marine music corps, later the music corps of the Second Sailors' Division, was set up in Wilhelmshaven . Carl Latann, previously a staff hoboist in various regimental bands of the army , was appointed as its leader. Latann played a major role in the increasing popularity of his orchestra, which made a name for itself through numerous concert tours in the German Empire . When the music corps was to be drastically reduced in size in the course of savings in 1878, Latann put in a vigorous protest and probably caused him to be relieved of his post in January 1884.

In the period that followed, Latann tried to gain a foothold in the civilian sector, initially with the aim of founding a music school in Wilhelmshaven. After this endeavor was unsuccessful, after a brief guest performance as a conductor in Jever , he moved to the Netherlands , where he took over the leadership of the Schützenkapelle in Nijmegen . After attempting to set up a music school in Wilhelmshaven again in 1887, he took over the position of music director in Bad Freienwalde for a short time, where he died in 1888.

Carl Latann left behind more than 250 works, including marches, overtures, romances and dances. Some autographs of the later works of Carl Latann are in the holdings of the music publisher Sikorski in the Saxon State Archives in Leipzig .
