Life

Career

Carl Mann - Mona Lisa

Carl Mann founded his first band in 1954. In 1957 he released his first single Gonna Rock 'n' Roll Tonite / Rockin 'Love for the tiny Jaxon label , of which 350 copies were pressed. The success came only in 1959 with the publication of his rockabilly version of the millionaire mona Lisa on the Sun sister company Phillips International. Despite fierce competition from a version of established star Conway Twitty, the record hit number 25 on the Billboard Hot 100 . The successor Pretend , coupled with a new version of Rockin 'Love , at least reached number 57 on the pop charts, and no further records made it into the charts.

This was followed by five more singles and an LP on Philips International, all like his first hit in a soft rockabilly sound, which, in addition to Carl's piano and vocals, was characterized by the striking playing of lead guitarist Eddie Bush . After his military service in Germany and unsuccessful recordings for Monument Records , Mann, now a family man, temporarily ended his music career and worked in a sawmill. During this time he struggled with alcohol problems. In 1974 he recorded a few singles for the ABC Records label .

Later years

Only the rockabilly revival at the end of the 1970s brought him some success again. In 1978 he made live performances and recordings in Holland . Mann toured America and Europe for about ten years and then turned his attention to the Church. Since then he has worked in the wood industry again .

His recordings for Phillips International have been re-released several times. Man appeared occasionally at large rockabilly festivals. In 2008 he worked with drummer WS Holland as a background musician on Rayburn Anthony's album Rockabilly Highway .
