Carl Mosterts
Carl Mosterts (born October 28, 1874 in Goch , Niederrhein ; † August 25, 1926 in Lausanne ) was the nestor of Catholic youth pastoral care and youth association work in Germany at the beginning of the 20th century.
Mosterts joined the KStV Brisgovia in the KV as a theology student in Freiburg and remained connected to it throughout his life. After ordination in 1900, he became a chaplain at the Church of St. Maximilian in Düsseldorf, and later at St. Lambertus in Düsseldorf. Here he soon became known as a priest who was open to the youth and who was also particularly talented in terms of education and organization.
Mosterts has significantly influenced the Catholic youth movement in Germany. In 1908 he became general secretary of the Association of Catholic Youth Associations, founded in 1896, and General Praeses in 1913 (then: Association of Catholic Youth and Young Men’s Associations in Germany). Under his leadership, the association grew to 4,400 clubs with 400,000 members (1926). Haus Altenberg , which he founded as a meeting place next to Altenberg Cathedral in Bergisches Land near Cologne in 1922, became the center of the Catholic youth movement in Germany under his successor Prelate Ludwig Wolker . It still exists today as a youth education center for the Archdiocese of Cologne .
In 1920 Mosterts founded the Catholic sports association Deutsche Jugendkraft as part of the 1920's Katholikentag . In the same year he received the honorary title of Monsignor .
