Carl Pfleiderer

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl Paul Pfleiderer (born July 3, 1881 in Waiblingen , † August 7, 1960 in Braunschweig ) was a German mechanical engineer and from 1912 to 1952 professor at the Technical University of Braunschweig . He developed the theoretical foundations of modern centrifugal pump construction .

life and work

The son of the cloth maker Carl Pfleiderer (1845–1927) and his wife Marie, b. Wirth (1847–1895) graduated from secondary school in 1899. He studied mechanical engineering at the Technical University of Stuttgart from 1901 to 1905 and completed his studies with the state examination and the degree of Dipl.-Ing. In 1906 the doctorate to Dr.-Ing. with a thesis on dynamic processes when starting up machines . From 1907 he worked in the industry for several years as a designer for pumps and steam engines. From 1909 he worked at Thyssen in Mülheim an der Ruhr as a senior engineer or department head.

University professor in Braunschweig

On January 1, 1912, Pfleiderer was appointed full professor for steam engine construction at the TH Braunschweig. During the First World War he did his military service from 1914 until 1917 as captain and leader of an artillery battery. When he returned to the university, he had been in charge of the university's own power plant since 1920, which was also used for research and training purposes. From 1945 to 1947 Pfleiderer was the university's prorector . Pfleiderer retired in 1949 and lived in 1951 at Herzogin-Elisabeth-Strasse 97 in Braunschweig. In September 1952 Hartwig Petermann (1919–1997) succeeded him as director of the institute.

Honors

Pfleiderer was made an honorary doctorate from the University of Stuttgart in 1951 on the occasion of his 70th birthday. Also in 1951 he was made an honorary member of the VDI and on July 3, 1951 he was made an honorary senator of the TH Braunschweig. Since 1949 he was a full member of the Braunschweig Scientific Society . In 1956 he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit and in the same year the Pfleiderer Institute for Fluid Flow Machines was named after him. In Braunschweig, Pfleidererstraße in the Kanzlerfeld district bears his name. On the occasion of Pfleiderer's 100th birthday, the VDI conference on hydraulic fluid flow machines - Carl Pfleiderer memorial conference was held at the TU Braunschweig from October 14 to 16, 1981 . On his 125th birthday, from July 3 to September 15, 2006, the exhibition Prof. Dr.-Ing. Carl Pfleiderer in the Braunschweig University Library .

Scientific achievement

Pfleiderer's most important research area was centrifugal pump construction. Such pumps for pumping liquids have been used for a long time, but there were no sound calculation bases for their construction. These processes were developed and patented by Pfleiderer, and Pfleiderer 's underperformance approach attracted worldwide attention and is still used today. His work on centrifugal pumps , published in 1924, soon became the standard work for the calculation and design of centrifugal pumps.
