Carl Louis Albert Pretzel (born August 14, 1864 in Groß-Tychow , Pomerania , † September 2, 1935 in Berlin ) was a German government director in the Prussian school administration and a teacher association official. He is the father of the Germanist Ulrich Pretzel and the publicist Sebastian Haffner .

Pretzel first became an elementary school teacher through a teacher training college and became rector in 1908 . In 1919 Konrad Haenisch brought the DDP member to the Prussian Ministry of Culture to revise the curriculum for the elementary school . In 1922, as a government director , he became head of the elementary school department in the Berlin Provincial School College . In 1929 he retired.

In the German Teachers' Association he was on the regional Berlin board from 1895 and on the executive committee at the Reich level from 1898. He only left in 1933. He founded a statistical central office and the newspaper service and led the association as managing director. He also chaired the main educational center and was editor of the magazine " DDS - Die Deutsche Schule " from 1913 to 1932. His successor was the National Socialist Kurt Higelke .

Carl Pretzel was buried in the Parkfriedhof Berlin-Lichterfelde West . Today the grave is one of the honor graves of the State of Berlin .
