Carl Robert Lessing
Carl Robert Lessing (born September 11, 1827 in Polish-Wartenberg ; † January 28, 1911 in Berlin ) was co-owner and editor of the " Vossische Zeitung ", district court director in Berlin and art and book collector.
Life
Carl Robert Lessing, a great-nephew of the poet Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1729–1781), was the son of Carl Friedrich Lessing the Elder. Ä. (1778–1848), Grand Chancellor of Prince Biron of Curland in Polish-Wartenberg , and his second wife. He was the half-brother of the history painter Carl Friedrich Lessing (1808–1880) and the doctor and botanist Christian Friedrich Lessing (1809–1862). He married Emma von Gelbke (1827–1895). His sons died early - with the exception of their son Gotthold Ephraim Lessing (1861–1919), lawyer and member of the Progress Party .
Lessing studied law and became district court director in Berlin. As the main owner and editor of the traditional “Vossische Zeitung” in Berlin (1850-1910), he was one of the most influential people in the capital. His house, built by Martin Gropius in 1866 at Dorotheenstrasse 15 in Berlin, was a meeting place for influential politicians, artists and art collectors from the early years .
In 1885 he bought the Meseberg estate and castle for his only son Gotthold Ephraim Lessing . From February 1891 he lived in it with his young bride Annazell , daughter of the future mayor of Berlin , Robertzell .
Carl Robert Lessing was not only an art collector, but also an active patron of the Royal Museums in Berlin. Among other things, he donated a valuable late Gothic figure of saints from Tilman Riemenschneider's workshop , which can be seen in the permanent exhibition in the Bode-Museum and whose information sign is proof of the donation “R. Lessing ”noted.
Carl Robert Lessing and his wife Emma were buried in the New Dorotheenstädtischer Friedhof at Liesenstrasse 9 in Berlin-Gesundbrunnen . The tomb was re-occupied after the rest period had expired.
