The Carl Schlenk AG is a metal processing company based in Barnsdorf at Roth in Bavaria . It produces metal powder , effect pigments and metal foils . It has been family-owned since it was founded. The stock corporation is not listed.

history

The company was founded in 1879 by Carl von Schlenk-Barnsdorf. He invested in the insolvent Zainmetallschlägerei Weiss & Feyertag in Barnsdorf and thus built up his own business. Schlenk expanded his company rapidly, began producing aluminum powder as early as 1892 and listed his company on the stock exchange five years later .

At the beginning of the 20th century, the first production site abroad was opened in the United States , but it was expropriated in 1920. After the First World War , Carl Schlenk's sons Arthur and Wilhelm took over management of the company. In 1928 Schlenk acquired a rolling mill in nearby Bernlohe and began manufacturing metal foils.

In 1957 Günter von Schlenk-Barnsdorf took over the management in the third generation. At the Barnsdorf site, the modernization and expansion of a new production technology for aerated concrete aluminum powder was completed in the mid-1960s . With the establishment of branches in the USA, France and Brazil, Schlenk positioned itself globally again. Two plants in Bojkovice ( Czech Republic ) and Kamnik ( Slovenia ) were taken over by Schlenk in 1992 and 1998 .

The next change at the top of the company took place in the mid-1990s. Joachim von Schlenk-Barnsdorf became the new board member of the family company. In 1999 the company opened another location in Germany in Bitterfeld . A gold bronze plant in Rothenbruck was also taken over in the 20th century .

In 2004, Schlenk established its own pigment factory in Jiangsu Province in the People's Republic of China . In 2008 production started in Taixing . In June 2020, production there was stopped and the branch closed. In China, the company has two branches in Shanghai and Hong Kong.

In 2020 Schlenk acquired API Lawrence in Lawrence, Kansas, USA . The manufacturer of special metallized foils was previously a supplier to Schlenk, but will continue to operate at the existing location, thus forming another Schlenk location in North America.

Products

Schlenk is a manufacturer of metal powders, effect pigments and metal foils and products for various purposes.

The metal foils division produces metal foils made of copper , copper alloys , nickel , nickel silver , resistance alloys and fine silver , some of which are used in extremely thin forms. The spectrum of applications for metal foils ranges from photovoltaic solar modules , lithium-ion batteries , special batteries , heat exchangers , surface finishes to fuses , capacitors , transformers , electronics , medical technology , flexible printed circuit boards to special cables and flexible flat cables for automotive technology.

In addition to metal foils, metal pigments and metal powders also play a major role. The metal pigments are produced from aluminum and various other metal alloys. The aluminum, gold bronze and high-gloss film pigments (Vacuum Metallized Pigments, VMP) produced are used in the paint and [plastics] industry, primarily to achieve metallic looks and effects (e.g. automotive paintwork , coil coatings and can coatings, Plastic coatings, industrial coatings , powder coatings , masterbatches , functional coatings such as corrosion protection , ship primers, roof coatings, reflective, barrier and shielding coatings ). Schlenk metal pigments are also used in the printing industry for gold, silver and metal effects, for example for packaging design with metal effects. The range in the printing and coating industry ranges from metal pigments to finished printing inks .

Finally, various aluminum powders and pastes with technical-functional applications are also used in the construction industry (aerated concrete due to its high thermal insulation, easy processing and low bulk density), the materials industry (air-atomized copper and copper alloy powder) and, in some cases, the chemical industry ( pyrotechnic products, explosives ) Use.

The area of solar energy is becoming increasingly important . In addition to connectors for crystalline and thin-film modules, the Light Harvesting String cell connector is intended to improve the effectiveness of the solar modules by avoiding shading. On the other hand, market penetration is increasing in the cosmetics industry , in which Schlenk supplies pigments for various, especially metallic, optical effects.
