Carl Schneider (organ builder)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carl Schneider (born March 31, 1817 in Kronstadt , Transylvania , Kingdom of Hungary , † March 18, 1875 ) was a German organ builder in Kronstadt.

Life

The father Petrus Gottlieb Schneider was organist at the Black Church in Kronstadt (today Brașov in Romania) and organ builder, the mother was Juliana Devai. Carl Schneider probably learned organ building from his father and worked for Carl August Buchholz from 1836 to 1838 building the organ in the Black Church . He then followed this for organ building in St. Nikolai Stralsund . There he met his wife Friederike Eggerts.

In 1841 Carl Schneider returned to Kronstadt and initially worked with his father, from around 1845 alone.

He is considered the most important organ builder in Kronstadt in his time. The organ building style is very much based on that of his teacher Buchholz, so he was almost the only one who used his wedge loop technique. Carl Schneider's organs are considered to be solidly handcrafted and of good sound quality.

In the last years of his life, József Nagy took over the management of the company.

Organs (selection)

About 20 new organs by Carl Schneider are known in Transylvania, one in the Moldavian region (Jasch). Some have been preserved.
