Georg Knipping

Georg Knipping (born January 22, 1814 in Hemeringen , † December 18, 1886 in Göttingen ) was a Prussian lieutenant general .

Life

His parents were the businessman Philipp Knipping († 1822) and his wife Elise, née Herschel († 1872).

Career

Knipping joined the 2nd Infantry Regiment of the Hanoverian Army as a cadet on November 20, 1830 and was promoted to titular secondary lieutenant at the beginning of February 1834 . From 1834 to 1836 he completed the military academy in Hanover for further training and has in the meantime received the patent for his rank. On February 2, 1838, he was transferred to the 3rd Light Battalion. There he was appointed General Staff Officer 2nd class on October 1, 1841 , and rose to Prime Lieutenant and Battalion Adjutant at the end of May 1845 .

During the campaign against Denmark , Knipping took part in the battles near Schleswig , Bilschau, the Düppeler heights, the windmill of Nübel, Stendrup, Osterdüppel and Ulderup. During this time he was promoted to Captain II class on November 9, 1849 . On December 16, 1851, he joined the 4th Infantry Regiment as a company commander and was in command of the 2nd Infantry Division from April 1855 to May 1859 as an adjutant . By the end of May 1861 Knipping advanced to lieutenant colonel and fought in the war against Prussia in 1866 near Langensalza and Mechterstedt.

After the annexation of Hanover by Prussia , he moved on March 9, 1867 in the Prussian Army and was a Lieutenant Colonel with patent from 3 May 1861 to the 3rd Infantry Regiment Magdeburg. 66 aggregated . Promoted to Colonel on April 18, 1867 , on June 14, 1867 he was appointed to command the 1st Battalion and on January 9, 1868 he was appointed commander of the 4th Lower Silesian Infantry Regiment No. 51 .

During the war against France in 1870/71 Knipping took part in the siege of Pfalzburg and Paris and the battles at Thiais and Choisy-le-Roi . Awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , he was appointed commander of the 22nd Infantry Brigade after the war under position à la suite of his regiment and promoted to major general on January 18, 1872 . In this position he received the Red Eagle Order II. Class with Oak Leaves in mid-September 1875 . He was put up for disposition on April 13, 1876 and was given the character of Lieutenant General with a pension . He died on December 18, 1886 in Göttingen.
