Carl Thiem

Carl Thiem (born October 10, 1850 in Nikolschmiede , Sagan district , province of Silesia , † September 7, 1917 in Cottbus ) was a German surgeon , he is considered to be the co-founder of trauma surgery in Germany. He was also referred to by his contemporaries as the "father of trauma medicine".

Carl Thiem was born the son of an organist and teacher. In 1898 he wrote the trend-setting “Handbook of Accident Diseases Based on Medical Experience”. He also had a good reputation beyond the city and state borders as a specialist in the field of traumatology . Today's Carl-Thiem-Klinikum Cottbus was named after him. It was opened on April 1, 1914 as the “United Urban and Thiemsche Heilanstalt”. The experiences from his private clinic on Mühlenstrasse (today's Wichernhaus) and the Medico-Mechanical Institute could be evaluated there. In addition, the Carl Thiem Medal is awarded today to deserving traumatologists. Thiem was a member of the Cottbus Masonic Lodge at the Well in the Desert and the Görlitz Masonic Lodge at the Dawn . His grave is in the Cottbus south cemetery .
