Carl Wilhelm Koppe
Carl Wilhelm Koppe (born July 6, 1777 in Göttingen ; died April 17, 1837 in Berlin ) was a German historian, lawyer, politician and diplomat. Koppe was Minister of State in Prussia and Prussian Consul in Mexico.
Koppe was a son of the general superintendent Johann Benjamin Koppe . He received his doctorate in Helmstedt in 1798 with the legal inaugural dissertation De iure principis circa immutanda emendandaque ea, quae in fundationibus ad pias causas specialiter a fundatoribus determinata sunt (Helmstedt, Fleckeisen, 1798). Later he acquired Spanish language skills while in French captivity . From 1816 he was a member of the government (Königl. Pruss. Go. Government council) in Minden and in 1828 was appointed to Berlin.
Koppe was commissioned to establish trade connections with the states in America that were independent of Spain . Samples of his letters from Paris , London , Liverpool , New York City , Philadelphia , Washington, DC and Veracruz from the years 1829/1830 had previously appeared in the journal Das Auslands . This quasi-introductory article was later followed by his publication Mexicanischestatus 1830–1832 .
He translated Hernán Cortés' reports on the Spanish conquest of Mexico into German with explanatory notes.
