Carl Freiherr von Stein zu Nord- und Ostheim (born February 15, 1673 in Regensburg , † March 5, 1733 in Marburg ) was a German nobleman and Prime Minister of the Electoral Mainz.

Life and family environment

He was born as the son of the Prime Minister of the Bayreuth margrave , Baron Carl von Stein , when his father was also margrave envoy to the Eternal Diet of Regensburg . He came from the old Frankish imperial knighthood dynasty of the Stein zu Nordheim and Ostheim , who were wealthy in Franconia and Thuringia. His mother was the second wife of his father, Margarethe Geyer, Free and Noble Mistress of Osterburg (1648–1722). Carl von Stein zu Nord- und Ostheim died on March 5, 1733 in Marburg an der Lahn and is buried there in the Elisabeth Church .

Political career

Carl von Stein studied law in Frankfurt (Oder) , Leipzig and Wittenberg . After completing his studies, he began an administrative career with various employers. At first he dedicated himself to the Teutonic Order , although of Protestant origin, and became a knight in 1701. He rose within the order, was Landkomtur of the Ballei Thuringia and finally governor of the Ballei Hessen . In addition, he also entered the imperial service and was imperial council. The Elector of Mainz also made use of his vast experience: he appointed Carl von Stein as his Prime Minister.

In addition, he also devoted himself to the management of his inherited family estates. In Völkershausen, one of the family's ancestral homes, he built the castle and the church. A portrait of Carl can still be found in this castle today.
