Carlo Ambrogio Mezzabarba (born April 30, 1685 in Pavia , † December 7, 1741 ) was a bishop of the Roman Catholic Church .

Life

Mezzabarba received his doctorate in both rights and then worked as papal secretary in Rome. After he was governor of Todi and then Sabina , he was ordained a priest on May 1, 1718 and was named titular patriarch of Alexandria on September 18, 1719 . He was ordained bishop on September 21, 1719 by the Cardinal Bishop of Albano , Fabrizio Paolucci ; Archbishops Giovanni Francesco Nicolai and Pier Luigi Carafa the Younger were co-consecrators . Pope Benedict XIII sent him as a legate to China to settle the rites dispute . He was received by the Chinese Emperor Kangxi , but failed to arouse understanding for the attitude of the Holy See, which refused to translate the rites into the Chinese languages. In a briefing, he instructed the missionaries in China to adhere to the Pope's instructions and returned to Europe in the autumn of 1721. On his journey, he transferred the body of legate Charles Thomas Maillard de Tournon . In 1725 he was appointed Bishop of Lodi .
