Carlo Nicoli (born October 4, 1843 in Carrara , † November 2, 1915 in Avenza ) was an Italian sculptor .

Life

Carlo Nicoli studied at the Accademia and distinguished himself from an early age. In 1864 he received the gold medal of the Concorso d'Invenzione for his death of Pompey . In that year he finished his studies and moved to Florence , where he worked with Giovanni Dupré . In 1868 his beggar won the gold medal at the art exhibition in Florence. Many years later, in 1880, it was carved in marble. His guarding angel from 1870 earned him a medal and praise from the Spanish King Alfonso despite initial harsh criticism . The waking angel has been reproduced several times. In 1871, the surprise of love earned much praise.

After his return to Carrara, Carlo Nicoli became honorary professor at the Accademia in 1875. In San Francesco a workshop was set up in the following year Cervantesstatue for Alcalá de Henares was produced. In 1878 another statue of Cervantes was created, depicting the poet in a seated position. From 1885 Carlo Nicoli was permanently employed at the Accademia.

Nicoli's works include a statue of Cardinal Francisco Jiménez de Cinsero , which was awarded the Fabbriotti Prize and was installed in the Senate House in Madrid . His portrait of Lord Beaconsfield is in Gladstone, and Charles Dickens in Melbourne . In Bahia in Brazil there is the 25 meter high memorial for the expulsion of the Portuguese and in Carrara itself the Garibaldi monument . In the Galleria Umberto I there are 18 statues of Nicoli, in Durban the Stepson monument, in Mexico the monument to General Empecidano and Miguel Hidalgo as well as various statues and altars in the Cathedral Nuestra Senora de Guadalupa , in Argentina a Fraybentosmonument . The library in Vatican City has a representation of the Virgin Mary Nicolis, in Palermo there was a bust of Francesco Guerrazzi and in the Methuen Memorial Music Hall there is a plastic implementation of the aurora fresco from the Palazzo Pallavicini Rospigliosi by Guido Reni . A Dante statue is located in Washington, DC in the Casa italiana .

After his death, family members continued to run the workshop. It still exists today.
