Carlo Rovelli (born May 3, 1956 in Verona ) is an Italian physicist and author.

Life

Rovelli studied physics at the University of Bologna from 1975 and graduated in 1981 with a diploma (Laurea). He received his PhD from the University of Padua in 1986 . As a post-doctoral student he was at Imperial College London (1986), the University of Rome (1987/88), Yale University (1987), Syracuse University (1989) and at SISSA in Trieste (1989). In 1988/89 he was assistant professor at the Universita dell Aquila and in 1990 assistant professor and 1994 associate and 1999 professor at the University of Pittsburgh . In 1998/99 he was research director at the Center for Theoretical Physics (CPT) in Luminy . In 2000 he became a professor at the University of Marseille .

Together with Lee Smolin (building on the work of Ashtekar ) he developed a theory of quantum gravity , which became known as loop quantum gravity . In 1994 he showed with Smolin that the observables for area and volume have discrete values in theory.

Together with Alain Connes , in order to address the fundamental problem of the role of time in quantum gravity, he set up the thermal time hypothesis , according to which the arrow of time is a merely emergent thermodynamic process.

In 1996 he developed a relational interpretation of quantum mechanics (see interpretations of quantum mechanics ).

He was Associate Editor of General Relativity and Gravitation from 1996 to 2006 and is on the editorial board of Nuovo Cimento B , Classical and Quantum Gravity and Foundations of Physics, and of the Journal of Mathematical Physics from 1995 to 2005 . He is editor of the Quantum Gravity Section of the Annales de l'Institut Henri Poincaré .

In 2018, Rovelli was one of the 200 signatories of an appeal in the newspaper Le Monde , in which it was warned of drastic consequences such as the extinction of the human species, unless a quick rethinking of problem areas such as climate change and the extinction of species and wider planetary limits occurs.

Rovelli has Italian and US citizenship.
