Carlos Aldunate Lyon

Carlos Aldunate Lyon SJ (born May 16, 1916 in Santiago de Chile ; † July 18, 2018 there ) was a Chilean Roman Catholic priest, university professor and author.

Life

Carlos Aldunate Lyon was one of four children from the marriage of Carlos Aldunate Errázuriz and Adriana Lyon Lynch. His brother José (born 1917, generally known in Chile as "El cura obrero", the worker priest) is also a Jesuit and professor as well as a well-known Chilean human rights activist during the dictatorship of Augusto Pinochet . Aldunate was the grandson of Carlos Aldunate Solar , a politician and president of the conservative Partido Conservador .

On March 19, 1940, Carlos Aldunate entered the novitiate of the Society of Jesus in Chillán , studied philosophy and theology in Chile, Argentina and Belgium, and was ordained a priest on December 23, 1944 in San Miguel, Argentina . In 1948 he received his doctorate in philosophy from the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven in Belgium.

Carlos Aldunate was involved throughout his life in the educational and spiritual apostolate of his religious community and worked as a teacher at various schools. He was rector of the Jesuit seminary in Chile and the Jesuit colleges of Santiago, Antofagasta and Osorno. One of his students in 1960 was Jorge Mario Bergoglio, today's Pope Francis , who studied for a year in Chile in the Jesuit Juniorate, which is now in Retiro Loyola's home in Padre Hurtado .

Aldunate was a professor at the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso and the Catholic University of Northern Chile in Antofagasta , of which he was Rector from 1966 and 1968, and at the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile . He worked as a theological teacher and pastor until he was 96 years old. Since 2013 he has lived in the Jesuit community in Santiago.

He was one of the main initiators and official advisor of the Charismatic Renewal Movement in Chile in the 1970s .

Carlos Aldunate published numerous works, including works on metaphysics and on paranormal phenomena.
