Carlos Damas

Carlos Damas (born April 8, 1973 in Coimbra ) is a Portuguese violinist . He is considered the most important modern violinist in Portugal.

Life

Damas was born in 1973 in the traditional university city of Coimbra. At the age of three he received his first music lessons. At the age of six he moved to Lisbon, where he took violin lessons from Vasco Brôco, Alexandra Mendes and Leonor Prado, who were violinists of the Gulbenkian Foundation . At the age of 15 he appeared for the first time as a solo violinist with the Portuguese radio orchestra under the direction of Sir Silva Pereira. After representing Portugal at the International Music Camp , he was honored by the American String Teachers Association ( Excellence in Performance and Leadership ). He was also awarded at the Portuguese young music competition.

In 1990 Damas moved to Paris, where he a. a. worked with Ivri Gitlis and Jacqueline Lefévre . In 1992 he became concertmaster of the orchestra at the Cité Internationale des Arts Paris , a. with Yehudi Menuhin . Damas also took a master class with Shlomo Mintz . Numerous tours and guest performances followed, including the Salzburg Mozart Week and guest performances in China, especially in Macau . Several of his recordings have also been published on CD, for example by Numérica and Naxos . His 2007 album Modern Solo Violin Music , with violin sonatas by E. Ysaÿe , Sérgio Azevedo , Prokofjew , Fritz Kreisler and Fernando Lopes-Graça , received an award from the arte TV station .
