Carlos Martínez de Irujo
Carlos Fernando Martínez de Irujo y McKean Tacón y Armitage , Margrave (Marqués) of Casa - Irujo, Duque (Duque) of Sotomayor (born December 14, 1802 in Washington, DC , † December 26, 1855 in Madrid ) was a Spanish diplomat , Politician and Prime Minister of Spain ( Presidente del Gobierno ) .
biography
The son of the later three-time Minister of State Carlos Martínez de Irujo y Tacón was born while his father was serving as envoy in Washington. His mother, Sally McKean, was the daughter of Thomas McKean , one of the founding fathers of the United States .
He began his political career on September 22, 1837 when he was elected as a member of the Partido Moderado member of parliament ( Congreso de los Diputatados ), where he represented the interests of the constituencies of Málaga and then of Palencia until February 1841 . On September 15, 1843 he was elected again as a member of parliament and was then until December 1846 representative of the constituencies of Córdoba and Madrid .
Between 1843 and 1848 he was also the second president of the casino ( Casino de Madrid ). On August 15, 1845 he was then appointed Senator for life ( Senador Vitalicio ).
On January 28, 1847, he was appointed Prime Minister of Spain ( Presidente del Gobierno ) to succeed Francesco Xavier de Isturiz . During his tenure, he also took over the office of Foreign Minister ( Ministro de Estado ) and was particularly keen to find a balance between the various political forces. However, his government was overthrown by Queen Isabella II's lover , General Francisco Serrano Domínguez , on March 28, 1847.
On October 23, 1847 he was appointed Foreign Minister in the third cabinet of Ramón María Narváez , of which he was a member until July 29, 1848. He was last appointed ambassador to Paris in 1850 . However, he lost this office on January 4, 1851 after Prime Minister Juan Bravo Murillo took office .
He has been honored several times for his political achievements and received the following awards, among others:
- Knight ( Caballero ) of the Order de Carlos III.
- Grand Cross of the Order of the Tower and the Sword ( Ordem Militar da Torre e Espada ) (Portugal)
