Carlos Trujillo (civil engineer)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Carlos Enrique Trujillo (* 1956 or 1957 in Pasto ; † January 14, 1993 at Galeras ) was a Colombian scientist. He taught as a professor of topographic civil engineering at the Centro de Estudios Superiores María Goretti (CESMAG) in his hometown. Together with his wife Anna Lucía Torres he had their son Mauricio.

In his private life, Trujillo had a special interest in volcanology and, as a photographer, often accompanied excursions to the summit of the nearby gallery . He also explained the geological processes of the volcano to youth groups.

In January 1993 a one-week IAVCEI conference was held in Pasto . The aim was to develop geochemical and geophysical monitoring programs for the galeras. Although this had been active since 1988, it had been stable and calm for the previous six months. During the conference, an international team of several scientists and interested laypeople set out for the crater - Trujillo among them. Shortly after 1.30 p.m., a small but extremely violent eruption occurred without warning, lasting just under 15 minutes. He was killed together with five other researchers ( Geoff Brown , Fernando Cuenca , Néstor García , Igor Menjailow and José Arlés Zapata ) and three tourists.
