Carlton Michael Gary

Carlton Michael Gary (born December 15, 1952 - March 15, 2018 in Jackson, Georgia ) was an American serial killer of African American origin.

In 1966, Gary was arrested for drug abuse. Up to his 18th birthday, his criminal record already included entries for robbery, arson and robberies.

On August 22, 1977, he began his first sentence in Janesville , New York, for burglary, stolen goods, and drug possession.

In the period from September 1977 to April 1978 a series of murders in place Columbus in the state of Georgia instead. During this period, seven women between the ages of 59 and 89 were assaulted, raped and murdered in their homes. Because the murderer strangled his victims with nylon tights, he was called "Columbus Stocking Strangler". Traces at the scene indicated that the murderer must be a black man.

He had intermittently raided steakhouses and fast-food restaurants in South Carolina and Georgia and was arrested for the robberies in 1979, a year after the last murder. He confessed to the escape from the New York prison and also the raids on the restaurants. In May 1983 he managed to escape again. Shortly thereafter, he was arrested in Albany , Georgia.

In 1986 Carlton Gary was sentenced to death for sevenfold murder, rape and robbery .

On March 15, 2018, Gary was executed by lethal injection on death row at the Georgia Diagnostic and Classification State Prison in Jackson, Georgia. Shortly before, the United States Supreme Court refused to postpone the execution. The drug lethal pentobarbital was from a pharmacy in -house production produced and provided for the execution available ( compounded pentobarbital ).
