Louis P. Carnesecca (born January 5, 1925 in Manhattan , New York ) is a retired American basketball coach . Between 1957 and 1992 he coached the Redmen basketball team at St. John's University in New York , which was later renamed Red Storm . This time was interrupted, however, from 1970 to 1973, when Carnesecca coached the New York Nets, now called Brooklyn Nets , in the US professional league American Basketball Association (ABA). Carnesecca's greatest achievement was winning the 1989 National Invitation Tournament . His overall record as a college coach is 526-200 and as an ABA coach 114-138. On May 11, 1992, Carnesecca was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame . In 2004, the Red Storm home ground was renamed Lou Carnesecca Arena .
