Carnuntum is a wine-growing region in Lower Austria that stretches east from Vienna to the Slovakian border and comprises 906 hectares of cultivation area. In terms of its geographical extent, it is congruent with the Bruck an der Leitha district .

Around 146 companies cultivate red and white wine varieties along the Danube . Until the end of the 2000s it was still combined with the Wagram wine-growing region . The name Carnuntum refers to the Roman legionary camp Carnuntum and the Roman civil town of the same name .

Geography and climate

The vineyards extend south of the Danube over the Leithagebirge, the Arbesthaler Hügelland and the Hainburger Berge. The influence of the Pannonian climate with its hot summers and cold winters, the Danube and the temperature-regulating Lake Neusiedl allow the grapes to ripen well. The river forms a buffer between the extremes of the respective climates. In cool weather it serves as a heat store, in summer heat it provides coolness. In the cultivation area around the Danube there are loess , lime and silicate soils, as well as loam and sand soils that are favorable for agriculture .

Grape varieties

In Carnuntum, grape varieties are grown that are suitable for lovely white wines. Red wines such as Pinot Noir or Cabernet Sauvignon , which need significantly more warmth and sun, are also grown here. The most widespread are the varieties Zweigelt , Blaufränkisch , Pinot Blanc , Chardonnay and Grüner Veltliner .
