Carpanthea pomeridiana is the only type of monotypic genus Carpanthea from the family of aizoaceae (Aizoaceae). The botanical name of the genus is derived from the Greek words carpos for 'fruit' and anthos for 'blossom' and probably refers to the open fruits of the species, which look like a star-shaped blossom when opened.

description

Carpanthea pomeridiana grows as annual , herbaceous plant . Its shoots , the leaf margins and the calyx are covered with long hairs that arise from the bladder cells . The flat pair of leaves are spoon or lance-shaped and do not contain any wax flakes in their epidermis .

The flowers are in large zymous inflorescences that encompass the entire plant. Its numerous slender petals are golden yellow and reddish in color on the outside. The five sepals are unequal in size.

The capsule fruits , more or less cup-shaped at their base, have 12 to 20 pods and are similarly shaped at their tips. Their narrow swelling strips end in awns. The fruits contain blackish brown, D-shaped and flattened seeds , the seed coat of which is papillate .

The chromosome number is .

Systematics and distribution

The distribution area of Carpanthea pomeridiana extends in South Africa in all western districts of the Western Cape Province . It grows on sandy plains with winter rainfall of less than 300 millimeters annually.

The first description of the genus by Nicholas Edward Brown was published in 1925. The only species he placed in his new genus was the species described by Carl von Linné in 1762 as Mesembryanthemum pomeridianum .
