The Federal Republic of Germany established an embassy in Lesotho on February 15, 1968, around one and a half years after gaining official independence on October 4, 1966, in Maseru. After internal political tensions and the declaration of a state of emergency, the Federal Republic closed its embassy on June 30, 1971. It reopened on October 10, 1977 and closed again in late 1994. Since then there is only one German honorary consulate in Lesotho.
The GDR did not establish official diplomatic relations with Lesotho until March 22, 1976. However, no embassy was opened in Maseru. First the respective GDR ambassador in Lusaka , Zambia, received a second accreditation for Lesotho. From 1986 the GDR ambassador in Maputo , Mozambique, was responsible for Lesotho.
