List of German ambassadors in Algeria
As early as 1898, the German Empire had a consulate general in what was then the French colony of Algeria . However, the Consulate General in Algiers was closed from 1914 to 1926 and from 1939 to 1956 because of the two world wars and in the post-war period.
The Federal Republic of Germany established a diplomatic mission in Algeria even before it gained official independence. This was opened on April 24, 1956 as Consulate General in Algiers . On October 1, 1962, almost 3 months after the former French department gained independence, the Consulate General was upgraded to an embassy. Due to the establishment of diplomatic relations between the Federal Republic of Germany and Israel on May 12, 1965, the Algerian government interrupted diplomatic relations with the Federal Republic. Until the resumption of relations on December 21, 1971, the interests of the Federal Republic of Germany were represented by the Swiss embassy.
The GDR only established official diplomatic relations with Algeria on May 20, 1970. The Hallstein Doctrine was one of the decisive factors for this . But the GDR had had a commercial agency in Algiers since 1963. From 1970 a GDR ambassador to Algeria was officially accredited.
