Gerd Berendonck

Gerd Berendonck (born March 5, 1924 in Solingen ; † March 14, 2020 ) was a German diplomat who was ambassador to Cambodia from 1964 to 1969 , to Algeria from 1980 to 1983 and to Pakistan from 1984 to 1989 .

Life

After graduating from high school , Berendonck studied history , philosophy and law at the University of Passau , University of Regensburg and the Rheinische Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität Bonn and graduated in 1951 with the first state examination.

He then joined the foreign service in 1952 and, after completing his career test, was employed at the embassy in Colombia in 1954 and then at the embassy in Thailand in 1956 . After a subsequent activity at the headquarters of the Foreign Office , he became ambassador to Cambodia in 1964 and held this office until 1969. His successor was Hans-Joachim Eick , who was previously deputy spokesman for the Foreign Office.

He then returned to Bonn and initially served as a lecturer in the Legation Council and was Deputy Head of Division for South and Southeast Asia , Australia and New Zealand in the Foreign Office. Subsequently, on April 15, 1970, he became head of this department and, as such, was promoted to Lecturing Legation Councilor, First Class on May 29, 1970.

After that he was envoy and permanent representative of the ambassador to the People's Republic of China from May 27, 1975 to 1977 and then until 1980 envoy and permanent representative of the ambassador to the Soviet Union .

In 1980 he was appointed ambassador to Algeria , where he succeeded Michael Jovy . In 1983 he was followed by Heinz Dröge , while after a year-long assignment in the Foreign Office he succeeded Klaus Terfloth as ambassador to Pakistan in 1984 . He held this position until he retired in 1989 and was replaced by Alfred Vestring .
